Where Can You Find Good Design?

For some reason, stumbling upon a well-designed object in your day-to-day life does not happen nearly as often as it should. It’s rare that I uncover something that stops me in my tracks, and the last place I would have expected to see something like that was during a recent trip to visit family in Fargo, North Dakota.

It was there that I picked up a local magazine off of my grandmother’s coffee table. This unassuming, little keepsake titled “on the minds of moms” grabbed even a father’s attention. The articles were written with a midwestern approachability and the photography elevated normal people to a beauty usually reserved for Hollywood. The magazine was so well-considered and so breathtakingly beautiful that I soon began to notice how I was slowly flipping each page in anticipation of the next.

The contributors to this little artifact poured themselves into this project and achieved something wonderful. It was smart, sophisticated, simple, and to top it off, they made it look effortless.

When was the last time that you stumbled onto something like this? When was the last time that you created something that had this type of impact?
